What comes after graduation?

Innovative Research Location

Top-level research is carried out at hundreds of research institutes at universities and in the private sector in Germany. This also offers career opportunities for international academics. Germany is a high-tech nerve centre with numerous industries focusing strongly on research: more than two-thirds of research funding in the country is financed by business. Many companies carry out their own top quality research as well as investing in numerous cooperative projects with partners from the world of science and scholarship. The sectors most actively involved in research include car manufacturing, information technology, electrical engineering, chemicals and mechanical engineering. Together with the USA and Japan, Germany is one of the world’s most active countries when it comes to patents in future-oriented fields, such as nanotechnology, biotechnology and renewable energy.

After successfully completing their studies, young graduates from most non-EU countries can renew their residence permits for an additional year in order to look for a job comensurate with their qualifications. The Research in Germany website provides a wealth of information on the broad spectrum of research in the country.
