Sustainable Building with Bamboo

“Germany and China: Moving Ahead Together” is the name of the largest ever German programme of events abroad, which has been travelling through China since 2007. One of its focal points is sustainability

They stand out because of their imaginative architecture and their resource-saving basic structure: the conference and exhibition pavilions for the German Esplanade of the “Germany and China: Moving Ahead Together” programme are made of bamboo and other high-tech materials. Munich-based installation artist Markus Heinsdorff designed and built the pavilions as an example of sustainable urbanization. China and bamboo – neither are new territory for Heinsdorff. He organized his first exhibitions in China ten years ago and bamboo is one of the materials he prefers to work with as an artist. As creative director, Heinsdorff was responsible for developing the concept for the Germany Esplanade: “I asked myself where Germany and China have points of contact and where cultural differences exist.” One interface he found involved ecological technology from Germany and the highly developed art of weaving in China. Putting the both together resulted in the bamboo pavilions as high-tech membrane structures with woven golden facades. They will be on display next in October in the metropolis of Wuhan in Central China and in an exhibition at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.
