Climate Consciousness:

10 Tips for Everyday Life

Good news for climate protection: for the third year in succession, greenhouse gas emissions in the EU have decreased – most recently by 1.2% or around 60 million tonnes of CO2 from 2006 to 2007. Between 1990 and 2007, Germany produced almost 24% less climate-threatening gas. It is not difficult to reduce C02 emissions, as a few examples show. Did you know …

... that consuming less meat protects the climate, and that one kilogram of beef less per week saves 500 euros and 700 kilograms of CO2 a year?

... that each degree of room temperature less saves about 6% of heating costs, and that a temperature of one degree less in your home saves 300 kilograms of CO2 per year?

... that an energy-saving lamp consumes about 80% less electricity than a conventional lightbulb? And if you change to energy-savings bulbs in your home you can save up to 330 kilograms of CO2 a year.

... that if you turn off the air-conditioning for four hours a day, 300 kilograms less CO2 are produced over a year?

... that buying a modern, energy-saving refrigerator (A++) saves 100 kilograms of CO2 a year?

... that buying regional products saves 300 kilograms of CO2 a year?

... that a prudent driving style and early gear-changes save 330 kilograms of CO2?

... that a four-person household can save 90 euros and 300 kilograms of CO2 annually if they do without a clothes dryer?

... that good heat insulation for outside walls, roof and cellar can enable you to reduce heating costs by 50%?

... that if you turn off television and hifi equipment instead of leaving them on standby, you can save 100 kilograms of CO2 a year?
